NDI Workflows with Magewell: Encoders, Converters, and How They Connect

10 Apr 20269 minVisionRGB

The Basic Model: Encoders and Decoders

NDI works in two directions. Encoders take a physical video signal (HDMI or SDI) and put it onto the network as an NDI stream. Decoders take an NDI stream from the network and output it as a physical signal. Most production software — vMix, Wirecast, OBS with the NDI plugin — can both send and receive NDI.

Magewell NDI Encoders

The Pro Convert HDMI TX and SDI TX are the entry-level standalone NDI encoders. Connect an HDMI or SDI source, connect to your network, and it appears as an NDI source to any NDI-compatible system on the same network.

The Pro Convert HDMI Plus and SDI Plus offer enhanced management features for permanent rack installations.

The Pro Convert HDMI 4K Plus encodes HDMI 4K60 to full NDI at 4:4:4 colour. For 12G-SDI at 4K/60fps, the 12G SDI 4K Plus is the device.

Magewell NDI Decoders

The Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI takes any NDI stream from the network and outputs it as HDMI video for a local display. No PC required. Also receives SRT and RTMP.

The Pro Convert for NDI to SDI outputs to 3G-SDI for broadcast infrastructure. The NDI to AIO outputs to either HDMI or SDI for flexible mixed environments.

Building a Simple NDI Workflow

The simplest NDI workflow: a Pro Convert HDMI TX at a camera position on your network, vMix running on a production PC on the same network. vMix auto-discovers the NDI source. No cables longer than your Ethernet runs.

High-Channel-Count Deployments

When you need eight or more simultaneous NDI encode or decode channels, the Modator Chassis 2U is significantly more efficient. Ten blade modules in 2U of rack space, sharing power, cooling, and management infrastructure.
